Fire Pit Art Lowboy 36" Handcrafted Carbon Steel Fire Pit — Low Profile
The Fire Pit Art Lowboy 36-Inch Carbon Steel Fire Pit is a low-profile, handcrafted wood-burning hearth designed by legendary metal artist Rick Wittrig and built by Tennessee craftsmen. At 36 inches in diameter and just 14 inches tall, the Lowboy delivers a commanding yet intimate fire experience that keeps flames below sightlines while radiating warmth across social circles of 6 to 12 guests. Its expansive bowl and ground-hugging stance make it the centerpiece of premium residential backyards, luxury resorts, mountain retreats, and lakeside viewing decks.
What Is a Low-Profile Fire Pit?
A low-profile fire pit sits closer to the ground than traditional bowl-style pits. The Lowboy stands 14 inches tall with a 7-inch pedestal base, compared to 20 to 24 inches for standard fire bowls. This subterranean styling preserves open sightlines across your patio while creating a more intimate atmosphere. Because the fire bed sits nearer to seated guests, low-profile designs radiate heat lower on the body, warming feet and legs more effectively than elevated bowls. The 36-inch diameter generates a massive heat radius that comfortably warms larger gatherings.
Handcrafted by Rick Wittrig in Tennessee, USA
Every Fire Pit Art Lowboy is individually designed by Rick Wittrig, a renowned metal artist and industrial designer, and fabricated by skilled craftsmen in Tennessee using 1/4-inch thick American-made mild carbon steel. This is the heaviest gauge metal used in fire pit manufacturing today — significantly thicker than the 16-gauge to 20-gauge sheet metals common in mass-produced retail fire pits. The result is a 155-pound unibody vessel that tolerates intense thermal cycles without warping, buckling, or burning through.
Because each unit is built entirely by hand, no two Lowboy fire pits are identical. Every piece is individually signed and numbered by Rick Wittrig on a premium brass plaque attached to the base — certifying your fire pit as genuine functional art.

Fuel & Ignition Options
Wood Burning (Standard): The classic campfire experience. Load seasoned hardwood and light. No gas lines, no electronics — just the crackle and aroma of real wood. The integrated 1.5-inch rain drain protects the basin from standing water.
Natural Gas Conversion: Convert your Lowboy to clean-burning natural gas with a match-lit system featuring an HPC patented Stainless Steel Penta burner. Includes 80 lbs of lava rock, whistle-free flex line, Dante valve, and 30-inch burner plate. Requires professional installation and a dedicated natural gas line.
Propane Conversion: Same premium gas burner setup configured for propane tanks. Includes 80 lbs of lava rock, flex line, Dante valve, and 30-inch burner plate. A hidden propane tank enclosure is recommended for a clean aesthetic.
AWEIS Electronic Ignition (Gas Models Only): Upgrade to the All-Weather Electronic Ignition System for push-button convenience. The AWEIS system includes a 24-volt AC transformer, fire module, heat shield, and flame-sensing technology. Tested in extreme conditions including freeze tests and high winds. Covered by a 3-year residential / 1-year commercial warranty.
The Iron Oxide Patina — What to Expect
The Lowboy's exterior features a natural iron oxide patina — a living finish that matures and deepens with every fire. When new, the steel appears dark and mill-scale gray. After the first several fires, a rich bronze and copper patina begins to develop. Over months of use, the surface settles into its final, permanent hue — a warm, variegated landscape of amber, rust, and charcoal tones.
Important Patina Care:
- Do not cover with a tarp — tarping will blacken the patina and halt the natural oxidation process
- Keep wet leaves and debris off the piece during the first few months of maturation
- Allow the patina to mature naturally with each fire
- The patina is self-protecting; no sealants, paints, or treatments are needed
- Surface rust is normal and part of the intended aesthetic
How the Low-Profile Design Affects Heat Distribution
Because the Lowboy sits just 14 inches tall, it distributes radiant warmth much lower to the ground than elevated fire pits. This allows comfortable heat waves to warm your feet, legs, and lower body directly — making it exceptionally cozy when paired with low-slung outdoor lounge chairs, Adirondack seating, or deep-seating patio sets. The 36-inch diameter generates a massive heat radius capable of comfortably warming social circles of 6 to 12 guests long after the live flames settle into glowing embers.
Integrated Rain Drain — Year-Round Outdoor Living
The bottom center of the steel bowl features a built-in 1.5-inch diameter rain drain that allows stormwater and melted snow to exit naturally through the open pedestal base. This eliminates the need to manually scoop out stagnant water or deal with waterlogged ash after heavy rain. Combined with the ultra-thick 1/4-inch carbon steel hull, the Lowboy is engineered to remain completely uncovered outdoors through every season — from sub-zero Midwest winters to scorching desert summers — without cracking, rusting through, or degrading.
